Diabetes meds that cause weight loss, the injectable drug indicated for the treatment of diabetic patients helped the obese to lose weight, according to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The drug used by researchers at Columbia University is liraglutide, used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
The experts conducted a trial to test the results of the drug (a peptide 1 similar to glucagon) in weight loss in overweight or obese adults who did not have diabetes at the start of the study.
The tests two years ago in 191 cities in 27 countries in Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and Australia. The 3,731 participants, whose average weight was about 106 kilos, into two groups: almost two-thirds received the drug along with a training to improve their life habits; the rest also improved their habits although they a placebo.
The experiment lasted 56 weeks. Those who received liraglutide received a higher dose than that prescribed to diabetic patients (1.8 mg) and daily.
The results showed that the people who received the medication lost on average 8.4 kilos in weight, compared to the 2.8 kilos that lost weight to those who the placebo.
In addition, 33% of patients treated with the drug lost more than 10% of their initial body weight, compared with 11% of the placebo group that managed to reach that same level, the study notes.
Among the adverse side effects, most were related to the gastrointestinal system and were of moderate intensity, among them diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain, while more isolated cases of coleocysts and cholelithiasis occurred.
Liraglutide in lower doses to treat diabetes for about five years and some patients noticed that it helped them lose weight.
